If your tooth is decayed or fractured below the gum line or needs a crown but there isn’t enough visible tooth structure, crown lengthening might be the solution. This surgery removes gum tissue and bone to expose more tooth crowns, enabling your dentist to perform restorative work. Proper post-operative care can help ensure a smooth recovery, prevent complications, and promote healing. Below are essential tips for what to do and avoid after crown lengthening surgery.

Do: Follow These Recovery Tips

Take Your Prescribed Medications

Your dentist will likely prescribe antibiotics and pain medications to help you heal and stay comfortable. Take these medications exactly as directed. If you experience any side effects like nausea or hives, contact your dentist immediately. Do not drive or work while on pain medication, as it may impair your ability to function safely.

Leave the Packing in Place

After the surgery, your dentist will use packing material to hold your gum tissue in place. This packing should stay in place for at least 48 hours. If it falls out before this, there is nothing to worry about. It won’t harm the site but may cause some cold sensitivity. Don’t try to replace it yourself; let your dentist handle it if needed.

Ice the Area

Ice is one of the most effective ways to reduce swelling and bruising. Apply an ice pack to your face for 15 minutes at a time, with 15-minute breaks in between. Use a protective layer, like a washcloth, to prevent direct skin contact. Continue icing for 3-5 days or until the swelling reduces.

Rinse Gently with Salt Water

Rinsing your mouth with warm salt water can soothe the surgery site. Mix 1 teaspoon of salt with a glass of room temperature water. Swish gently to avoid disturbing the packing. However, avoid salt water if you’ve been prescribed Peridex Rinse.

Stick to a Soft Diet

After surgery, eat only soft foods that you can easily cut with a fork. Avoid chewing on the surgery side and steer clear of sharp or hard foods, like popcorn or chips, that could injure the healing site. If you have a crown lengthened in your front teeth, avoid biting into anything.

Apply Pressure If Bleeding Occurs

If bleeding happens, place firm pressure on the gum tissue around the treated tooth for about 10-15 minutes. Most bleeding issues stem from not icing properly or chewing on the surgery site. If bleeding persists, call your dentist.

Rest and Elevate Your Head

Rest is crucial for a faster recovery. Sleep with your head slightly elevated using pillows to minimize swelling, bruising, and bleeding.

Avoid These Common Mistakes

Don’t Drink Through a Straw

Using a straw can create suction that may dislodge the packing material and cause bleeding. Avoid drinking through a straw until fully healed.

Don’t Trim Your Sutures

Your sutures are dissolvable, so there’s no need to trim them unless they are hanging loose. If this happens, contact your dentist for guidance.

Don’t Brush Over the Surgery Area

While you brush your other teeth, avoid brushing the surgery site for a few days. Use a damp Q-tip to clean your teeth if needed gently. Also, avoid mouthwashes with alcohol, as they can irritate the site.

Don’t Eat Irritating Foods

Avoid eating citrus, spicy foods, salt, or alcohol, as these can irritate your gums. Anything that might sting a paper cut should be avoided.
