What is Cosmetic Bonding?
Bonding is the application of a tooth-colored composite resin (plastic) to repair a decayed, chipped, fractured or discolored tooth. Unlike veneers, which are manufactured in a laboratory and require a customized mold to achieve a proper fit, bonding can be done in a single visit. The procedure is called bonding because the material bonds to the tooth.
What it's used for?
Cosmetic bonding is among the easiest and least expensive of cosmetic dental procedures. The composite resin used in bonding can be shaped and polished to match the surrounding teeth. Most often, bonding is used for cosmetic purposes to improve the appearance of a discolored or chipped tooth. It also can be used to close spaces between teeth, to make teeth look longer or to change the shape or color of teeth. Sometimes, bonding also is used as a cosmetic alternative to amalgam fillings, or to protect a portion of the tooth's root that has been exposed when gums recede.
Preparation
No preparation is needed for bonding. Anesthesia often is not necessary, unless the bonding is being used to fill a decayed tooth.
How It's Done
Dr. Alvarez begins the process by using a shade guide to select the composite resin color that closely matches the tooth's natural color. Once the color is chosen, he gently roughens the surface of the tooth by lightly abrading or etching it. A conditioning liquid is then applied to the tooth, ensuring proper adhesion of the bonding material. With the tooth prepared, Dr. Alvarez carefully applies the tooth-colored, putty-like resin, molding and smoothing it to achieve the desired shape. Finally, an ultraviolet light or laser is used to harden the material.
After the cosmetic bonding material has hardened, Dr. Alvarez proceeds to trim and shape it further. The material is then polished to match the sheen of the surrounding tooth surface. The entire procedure typically takes between 30 minutes to an hour. If multiple teeth require treatment, it may be necessary to schedule several visits.
To maintain the integrity of the composite restoration, it is important to avoid consuming foods and beverages that can stain the resin for the first 48 hours following the procedure. Examples include tea, coffee, and cigarette smoke. Additionally, maintaining good oral hygiene by regular brushing and professional cleanings by a dental hygienist can help prevent and minimize stains over time.
